And so I had my surgery and am still undergoing treatments. Everyone thinks I am over the hard part. Yes, I was lucky. What I did not anticipate was the financial cost of having cancer. The biggest challenge was being able to afford food. After a few weeks, my cupboards and freezer were empty and I had no money. I was desperate. It is humiliating to admit to anyone just how poor I had become. I was advised by my SW to apply to the Breast Cancer Support fund, and that was a gift that I will be forever grateful for. Although I have passed the surgery and radiation stage, I have ongoing treatments, medications and side effects to deal with. I was provided with a grocery voucher and I will be able to purchase food for a while. So, please accept my sincerest gratitude for your help making the stresses and challenges of cancer easier to bear.   â€‹
